Day 7: Favorite album cover
Parachutes! I love that the band members took the photo themselves (or so I’ve heard) and that it actually has some significance for them, as this globe was always present atop Chris’s piano at their early performances. Also, by some crazy coincidence—or maybe not—I have been in possession of a nearly identical yellow light-up globe since long before I started listening to Coldplay, and, even more strangely, it has made its home on my desk right next to MY OWN piano (keyboard, whatever…) since I started playing. It no longer lights up and I really have no use for it, but I can’t bring myself to get rid of it. I think it’s a sign.

Congrats to Argentina for making history by becoming the first Latin American country to legalize gay marriage.

Day 6: Favorite era

Not surprisingly, my favorite era thus far has been the Viva era. This was the period during which I really fell in love with the band so I can’t really pick any other era. Also, as much as people make fun of their military-style outfits, I like them and I feel that the theme really adds to the atmosphere of live shows. I mean, considering the way they used to dress for performances, in all black, there’s really no comparison.

I suppose I just love the whole attitude of the Viva era in general: lively, optimistic, colorful, and inspired by Latin America of course! And you can’t forget the spectacular additions they made to their stage show during this time, including the unforgettable butterfly-confetti showers, the vivid artwork in the background, the giant yellow balloons bouncing through the audience during Yellow…and Chris clumsily dancing around the stage wearing that Chinese dragon head.

Almost certainly, “Nothing could be better, and nothing ever was.”

Day 5: Favorite album

This is a tough one. I’m going to go with Viva La Vida, based on the number of times I’ve listened to that album, and the fact that for me, it NEVER gets old. But first I must say a few words about a very underrated album.

X&Y was what first made me fall in love with Coldplay, after hearing Clocks on the radio. I don’t know why I never bought A Rush Of Blood back then, but somehow I ended up with X&Y and I adored it. It was very special to me because I felt as though the songs on that album articulated many of my most deeply felt emotions, the things I could not express myself. I was extremely quiet and shy in middle and high school…well I kind of still am, although I’ve grown a lot since then. But in those days I was very lonely and, I hesitate to say miserable, but I wasn’t particularly happy. Several of my friends turned their backs on me and I was picked on a bit in high school. But I found solace in this album. It made me realize that I was not alone, that I was not the only one who had ever been “lost and hurt and lonely too” (Square One). I remember listening to it on the bus on the way to and from school, and once on the way back from a marching band trip when I was feeling particularly lonely, really late at night. It comforted me more than words can say. I didn’t even care that Coldplay was considered “uncool” back then; I only knew that I loved that album regardless of what anyone said. It will always have a special place in my heart.

But Viva…what can I say? If X&Y represents my high-school self, Viva represents what I have grown into, so I suppose I experienced the same sort of self-discovery that the band went through in writing this latter album. Admittedly, I didn’t grasp the full meaning of it at first; I thought it was different, kind of weird, and about death. But after listening to it several times I understood: it’s not about death, it’s about life! VLV is actually an incredibly life-affirming, optimistic album, more so than anything they’ve put out in the past, and for that I’d have to say it’s my favorite. It also played a huge role in helping me adjust to a new life at college, away from home for the first time. The night before I left, I listened to the album before I fell asleep because I was scared out of my mind, and that turned into the first new habit I acquired my freshman year, and perhaps the most helpful. Because I listened to it so much, before long I felt as though the outlook expressed on that album was starting to rub off on me. I became a happier, more relaxed, and much more grateful person during my first semester, which is in part due to the amazing school I am so blessed to be attending, but also due to this beautiful music. Lost! became my anthem for the longest time. I also really admire the new direction they took with their sound on this album. It’s bold, yet not so bold that it can’t be grasped by mainstream audiences. It’s still very easy to relate to, which is one of the many things I love about their music.

So there you have it. Wow, this is getting quite personal. But it’s impossible for me to separate Coldplay from my personal life; the two are inextricably intertwined. I should probably learn to be more concise, however. :P

That’s actually a far better solution than half the stuff BP has come up with so far.

It could work. There’s enough of them.

Day 4: Favorite song

Strawberry Swing, hands down. Well actually, I could probably list any number of Coldplay songs as my favorites, because I love almost all of them. But Strawberry Swing stands out to me, somehow. It just makes me ridiculously happy every time I hear it. It’s a song about living in the moment, about being grateful for every day on this earth, among other things, and it never fails to make me feel really good. I think it speaks to the mellow, peace-loving hippie inside of me better than any other Coldplay song can.

Day 3: Favorite band photo

I’m gonna go with this one because I’ve already spent nearly an hour looking at pictures…but really, they look great in every picture. <3
